The Repression Of Evangelism In Greece: European Litigation Vis-À-Vis A Closed Religious Establishement (2001)
Evangelism can lead to jail sentences in Greece, historically the "cradle of democracy." Lawyer-Theologian John Warwick Montgomery, who has successfully fought the Greek anti-proselytism law in the European Court of Human Rights, analyzes the Greek religious and civil rights paradox. Montgomery contends that religious establishment per se (a state church) is not the source of the problem to be found in Greece. The State and its established church should distinguish between "first generation" human rights (civil liberties) and "second generation" rights (economic and social benefits), carefully limiting the privileges of the establishment to the latter, while preserving an open marketplace for religious expression and practice on the part of other belief systems. A book for human rights advocates, missionaries, and all who support an open marketplace for religious expansion.248 pages
